Meet Dr. Brooks
Joseph Brooks, DO, MHA, FAOCPMR, FAAPMR is an experienced Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) specialist dedicated to providing comprehensive care to patients in the Quad Cities community.
Dr. Brooks completed a dual degree program earning both his Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine (DO) and a Master’s in Health Administration (MHA) at A.T. Still University, Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCOM) in 2007. Dr. Brooks is proud to be a graduate of KCOM, the founding school of Osteopathic Medicine. Following his graduation he completed a traditional rotating internship at Trinity at Terrace Park in Bettendorf, IA and subsequently completed residency in PM&R at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. Dr. Brooks served as Chief Resident of Research in his fourth year of post-graduate training (PGY-4).
Upon completion of post-graduate training, Dr. Brooks moved to the Quad Cities with his wife and four children and worked as an employed physician at Genesis Health System for 12 years, holding a variety of leadership positions including Medical Director of Spine and Medical Director of Inpatient Rehabilitation.
He now serves patients in the Quad Cities at his locally-owned private outpatient practice, Vitality Physical Medicine. He also provides care for patients at Quad Cities Rehabilitation Institute in Moline, Illinois.
Following post-graduate residency training, Dr. Brooks achieved board certification in PM&R by the American Board of PM&R (ABPMR) and also the American Osteopathic Board of PM&R (AOBPMR).
Dr. Brooks has a love of lifelong learning and has completed over 200 hours of continuing medical education (CME) in musculoskeletal Ultrasound (MSK US) and earned certificates of proficiency in MSK US of the hip, knee, ankle, foot, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand. Dr. Brooks has also become certified in Independent Medical Examination (IME). After completing advanced courses and several years of clinical experience, Dr. Brooks became board-certified in Pain Management by the AOCPMR.
Dr. Brooks’ education, certifications, experience, and service to his profession has earned him the respected designation of Fellow in both the American Osteopathic College of PM&R (FAOCPMR) and Fellow in the American Academy of PM&R (FAAPMR).
Dr. Brooks has over 12 years of experience with a wide range of patient conditions, including complex rehabilitation needs requiring a hospital-based team as well as outpatient neurodiagnostic testing and spine and joint pain clinics. He brings a wealth of expertise to our clinic and a commitment to excellence.
Dr. Brooks actively contributes to his field through publishing studies in academic journals and engaging with professional organizations like the American Osteopathic College of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AOCPMR), Iowa Osteopathic Medical Association (IOMA), and Scott County Medical Society (SCMS), ensuring he stays updated with the latest advancements in medicine. Dr. Brooks has given back to his professional family, serving locally as president of SCMS, past trustee of IOMA at the state level, and current trustee to the executive council for AOCPMR at the national level. Dr. Brooks has also served as a Delegate to the House of Delegates for the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) in a multitude of capacities, participating in debates over the future of medicine at the national level.
Dr. Brooks has served locally on the board of the Quad City Osteopathic Foundation as well as a past Medical Director of the Quad Cities Triathlon.
He has co-chaired the AOCPMR national CME meetings multiple times in the past few years, helping the national organization navigate educating physicians before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Brooks believes all therapeutic patient-physician relationships are founded on trust and mutual respect, and follows the Tenets of Osteopathic Medicine, the Osteopathic Oath, and the AOA Code of Ethics in his practice of the art and science of medicine.
Dr. Brooks offers a comprehensive range of PM&R services, including neurodiagnostics (EMG/NCS), trigger point injections, joint injections, spasticity management, therapeutic botulinum toxin injections, musculoskeletal medicine, non-operative orthopedic medicine, pain management, and OMT (osteopathic manipulation treatment). His goal is to help patients achieve the highest level of function, pain management, and overall quality of life. He seeks to see the patient first and the disease second; to find health and wellness with his patients is the goal.
When Dr. Brooks isn’t serving patients or professional organizations, he keeps busy with his wife raising four children in the Quad Cities. He enjoys time with his family, movies, billiards, volunteering at Legacy Church, boating, swimming, grilling out, traveling, and reading.
